Work Injuries
How to Prevent Work Place Injuries
Hundreds and even thousands of work place injuries happen every year. This injury may occur no matter how simple or how complex your task is. Whether you are working at home, in the office, in the construction site or in the factory, the probability that an injury may happen is high. It is the obligation of the employer to ensure a safe work place for its employees and workers. However, it is also a responsibility of the employees to complete their task in a safe manner.
Here are the different safety measures to prevent work place injuries.
1. Be aware that certain jobs may lead to specific types of injury
Awareness on the nature of your job as well as on its risks is very important. This will help prevent an injury in the first place. If you are a welder, you need to wear proper safety equipment during welding.
2. Focus your sole attention on what you are doing
Giving your full concentration to whatever task you are doing will minimize if not totally eliminate work place injuries. It should be common sense if you are driving a forklift truck to look where you are going and not at someone talking to you, or if you are up high on a ladder to not reach for something that will unbalance you.
3. Use personal protective equipment during working time
PPE’s such as helmet or head gears, eye goggles, ear plugs, masks, gloves, safety harness and safety shoes should be used at all times. Though protective equipments make someone feel uncomfortable, they provide the necessary safety to help avoid work related injuries.
4. Report any hazardous conditions
Sometimes, work place injuries happen due to a minor mess such as an oil or water leak on the floor, defective machine or tool with no labels and others. It is the responsibility of every employee to report any unsafe condition that may lead to injury and the responsibility of the employer to ensure this is dealt with immediately.
5. Pay attention to pain
Whenever your body feels pain, it is its immediate response to any injury. So, if you feel sudden pain while doing your job, discontinue the work and notify your immediate superior.
6. Seek assistance when needed
If you feel an object is too heavy to lift, do not hesitate to ask help from your co-workers. Using the buddy system will help distribute the weight of heavy items and it allows safer movement.
7. Strictly follow all posted work instructions and safety policies
Every line in the production area has its own process and procedure. Familiarize yourself with all the work instructions and ensure that safety measures are in practice at all times to avoid work place injuries. You may recommend improvements when you feel necessary.
8. Put signage on any unsafe situation
While the janitor is sweeping the floor, he should put signage such as “wet floor”. When there is an on-going construction or repair in the production area, the maintenance or contractor should put signage such as “under construction” or “under repair”. This safety measures will warn the employees and other workers to take extra care to avoid work place injuries.
Work place injuries never just happen at construction sites or in factories. Every work place has its own set of unique challenges as it offers daily chances for an injury to occur. Still, the best way to avoid injuries in the workplace is to make yourself aware of the risks that are associated with your job and to take measures to ensure that your workplace is a safety-conscious environment. The above safety measures will help every employee or worker to prevent an injury.
